In Handbrake, the M1 Ultra encoded Tears of Steel at into at about 94 frames per second (fps), while the next closest, the M1 Max and M1 Pro, were able to encode that same video at 76 fps. In terms of creative benchmarks, it’s no surprise that the M1 Ultra packed into the Mac Studio is the absolute winner here. Creative workloads are what make MacBooks some of the best laptops around, so how the M-series chips handle various tasks is an important matter. Wright’s advice to managers at Microsoft: Give employees clear goals that drive team and company results and make customers, profits and products the focus of discussion with employees - “not jostling and jockeying for your own benefit.Well, what about creative performance? This is the Apple M-series bread and butter, after all, so this is what a lot of people are going to want to look at. They need constant positive reinforcement and feedback, and now that they are losing their gold medal they may look elsewhere for recognition and personal affirmation of their success.” “Exceptional performers are high-maintenance. “The top performers may leave,” she predicted. Microsoft is not completely home-free with this move, though, according to Wright rather, the company needs to execute its exit from the system carefully if it wants something new to succeed. Yahoo is now suffering a public relations nightmare for putting in place a similar system, he added. “It created a storyline that Microsoft does not need as it faces many questions and concerns regarding its future.” “Stack ranking had received bad reviews from former employees and in the media,” he said. Microsoft will also get a positive PR boost from the move, David Johnson, CEO of Strategic Vision, told the E-Commerce Times. “You can’t have a rewards program that incentivizes individual performance in an organization that requires gargantuan cross-group collaboration.”Īs an added bonus, Wright added, “managers get 20 percent of their time back in May, June and July, as there are no more wasted calibration meetings.” “Executives’ and employees’ pay will now be linked to team and company goals rather than personal goals,” Wright noted. The system was so despised, however, that doing away with it actually gives Microsoft a good shot at executing its “One Strategy, One Microsoft” vision, Val Wright, principal at Val Wright Consulting, told the E-Commerce Times. Microsoft did not respond to our request to comment for this story. With CEO Steve Ballmer on his way out, a popular theory is that he wants to hand over a more cohesive and collegial company. Why Microsoft is doing away with the system only now is open for debate. “These types of systems ignore evidence-based management suggestions and run the risk of alienating not just top talent, but the respect of customer bases as well.” “Without having empirical backing and sufficient support for a performance measurement system, you are likely to have highly dissatisfied employees and create a dysfunctional culture,” Fullick told the E-Commerce Times. Rumor has it that the system was highly political, according to Julia Fullick, assistant professor of management at Quinnipiac University, and didn’t rely on reliable and valid measures of employee performance. Stack ranking is disliked by employees for obvious reasons: It establishes a competitive dynamic with co-workers that can be cutthroat as workers maneuver to be ranked in the top percentile or - conversely - to avoid the bottom of the heap. Nevertheless, the practice was singled out not long ago in a Vanity Fair article as a contributing factor to what the magazine called Microsoft’s “lost decade.” A Hated System It was used most famously during Jack Welch’s tenure at General Electric most recently, Yahoo is said to have adopted it. Microsoft is hardly the only company that uses some variation of this technique. According to the lore surrounding Microsoft, the bottom percentile of performers were either encouraged to improve their game, immediately, or shown the door in one fashion or another. In a nutshell, the stack ranking technique requires managers to rate their employees on a curve - that is, from best to worst. Instead, the company is changing its performance review program “to better align with the goals of our One Microsoft strategy,” wrote Lisa Brummel, the company’s executive vice president of human resources, in an internal memo reportedly sent to Microsoft employees on Tuesday and now reproduced on The Verge. Microsoft is ending its controversial practice of using stack ranking to evaluate its employees.

GH news and spoilers disclosed that GH writers wanted Howarth’s new role to play a lighter, softer, character, as opposed to the dark and twisted early version of Franco Baldwin. It turned out Austin is very interested I. Because of this name drop, GH fans began to wonder if Austin would have some type of connection to Holt. GH fans radar went off in the May 17th episode when Monica Quartermaine (Leslie Charleson) mentioned Jimmy Lee Holt as an example of how the Quartermaine family has survived many who have done before Valentin Cassadine (James Patrick Stuart). Word is he will not be Franco and he wont even be his former ABC soap character, Todd Manning, but when he does make his comeback, we will be seeing a whole lot of him. Something Austin does sends Maxie into a panic and she’ll ask if Peter sent him. General Hospital rumors suggest that Austin Holt is in fact a Quartermaine. Credit: ABC General Hospital The General Hospital sneak peek for Friday teased more on the way with this. The actor’s return has happened, and it came in an unexpected way. However, the show shared nothing about who he would play. GH rumors indicate that Austin’s email regarding an ELQ board meeting is a key clue to Austin’s identity and background. General Hospital spoilers previously teased the return of Roger Howarth. Austin Holt has roots here in Port Charles, as he is tied to a very prominent and powerful family. Will Austin be the reason Maxie and Brook Lynn’s plan unravels? The two girls recently discussed coming clean and letting Maxie have baby Louise, and now it looks like there may not be a choice. If Austin is a Quartermaine, this changes the game for everyone involved, including Valentin and Brook Lynn’s (Amanda Setton) scheme to take Valentin’s shares by passing off Maxie’s (Kirsten Storms) baby as hers and Valentin’s. GH fans believe that Austin is the son of Edward Quartermaine’s son, Jimmy Lee Holt, making Austin a Quartermaine, and throwing a wrench into whatever plans Valentin Cassadine (James Patrick Stuart), Monica Quartermaine (Leslie Charleson), and the Q’s have for ELQ. While obviously demanding nowhere near as much room in your backpack as the average gaming laptop would, the Steam Deck definitely pushes portability to its limits, especially once it’s inside a case, and if you’re brave enough to whip it out on a plane then people are going to notice.Īll that said, the Steam Deck is a really well-designed piece of kit that feels really good in the hands. This is obviously no Game Boy Advance, though if you’re sitting down for an extended session of Cyberpunk 2077you’re going to feel the hand fatigue after a while, and the Deck is too heavy to comfortably hold in front of your face for a long period of time. At 669g it’s well over 200g heavier than the Switch OLED too, although the weight strangely hasn’t bothered us too much, presumably because it’s usually propped on our lap while we lie on the sofa or the bed. In fact, we’ve been using ours every day for over two weeks and still wouldn’t say we’re completely used to the chunky boy’s presence. The Steam Deck measures 11.7in in length and is just under 2in thick, and it’s impossible not to be struck by its sizeable dimensions when you pick it up for the first time. The Nintendo Switch OLED, which is hardly a diminutive piece of handheld hardware, looks and feels teeny by comparison, and we’re slightly terrified to even see how the Deck looks next to something like the PlayStation Vita. Let’s get this out of the way quickly: the Steam Deck is big. If you want to get into good quality PC gaming, the Steam Deck is the cheapest way to do it. The Steam Deck isn’t cheap, then, but it’s incredibly affordable when compared to an even half-decent desktop gaming PC or laptop. That’ll no doubt soon be loaded up, but Micro SD support makes it easy to add more if needed. Mr Dacre's rag (albeit covered by libel insurance so let's not feel any sympathy) had to pay £125,000 to TV psychic Sally Morgan after falsely accusing her of using a hidden earpiece to scam a theatre audience.Human beings have had more luck in taking on this least reliable of third-party published sources. It is hard to sue over the many Eurolies told down the years – you can't defame a banana – but lies they are, all told by the vastly wealthy Dacre who rips off EU subsidies for his enormous Highland estate. Here, with the referendum now behind us, they can have their cake and eat it for example, taking the mickey out of a woman who raised the famous 'bent banana' issue on Question Time as the reason for her LEAVE vote, the same reporter having been one of the journalists responsible for spreading the lie in the first place. Of course on Europe, the Mail and the other leading members of the Brexit Lie Machine have fed their readers a diet of lies over the years. Last night, I was heading to the studio well stocked with examples of their lies about human rights, Muslims, vaccines, climate change, and of course cancer – which, as someone tweeted yesterday, is almost certainly caused by spending too much time on Wikipedia. The Daily Mail represents the worst of British values One of his latest obsessions (among the lies being pumped out on a near daily basis) is overseas aid – it accounts for less than 1% of government spending, yet a quarter of British people believe it is one of the top three items of public expenditure, ahead of schools and pensions. We think 30 percent are black or Asian (11%). (It's 5%.) We think 34% call themselves 'Christian.' (59%.) We think 31 percent of the population are immigrants. Religion and race: we think a quarter of the UK population is Muslim.Welfare fraud: the public estimated that £24 out of every £100 spent on benefits is claimed fraudulently. In fact, pensions accounted for fifteen times as much as JSA. Welfare: around a third of people said the government spent more on Jobseeker's Allowance than on pensions.Violent crime: more than half thought it was rising when the opposite was the case.Teenage pregnancies: the public thought fifteen percent of young girls get pregnant. It revealed the extent of public ignorance about some of the key issues facing the country before the last election, and which are regularly and inaccurately covered in his rag. But with papers like the Mail so central to our media culture, and papers like the Express aping them in many ways in recent times, we have been dealing with the 'fake news' phenomenon for some time.ĭacre cannot take all the credit, but must definitely take some, for the remarkable findings of a King's College/Ipsos-Mori survey of UK opinion. The elevation of Donald Trump to President, and the role of the Russian government and largely Eastern European media entrepreneurs in the US elections, has seen 'fake news' enter the language and provoke a lively debate about the nature of journalism in the US. alternative facts) and has a pathological dislike of admitting wrongdoing and, when forced to do so, buries apologies where few shall see them. Enough said about the paper that regularly tops the list of complaints about mistakes (err. For example, one signal that a news organisation engages in fact-checking and has a reputation for accuracy is the publication of corrections. Wikipedia also use a variety of criteria to evaluate reliability. Well, the Mail is certainly a third-party published source, but for the rest of it. On the issue we were meant to be discussing (and let's park the fact that the BBC didn't dare just empty chair the Mail's coward-in-chief), when one looks at the guidelines that cover Wikipedia sourcing, why on earth should anyone consider the Mail to be a credible source? As a general rule, Wikipedia seeks to use "reliable, third-party, published sources with a reputation for fact-checking and accuracy". Cowardice and a refusal to engage in debate, while expecting everyone to respond to whatever fanciful allegations he wishes to make against them, are high up a very long list. An organic artifact that fell from the sky inexplicably transports you across the universe. In other news, Obduction‘s turn to PlayStation 4 allows Cyan to bring Obduction‘s virtual reality experience from a one-note PC gaming novelty to a brand new experience for a variety of console players. But the PlayStation VR is an accessible and affordable alternative for many consumers, especially console users. HTC Vive and Oculus Rift are notoriously expensive to own, both due to their sheer cost and the hardware specifications needed to assure a PC is suitable for rendering virtual reality environments. One of the most exciting aspects of Obduction‘s turn to PSVR is its availability to consumers. According to GamesBeat, the developer is also looking into adding hand controls for players to interact with objects. The game raised 1.3 million through the crowdfunding campaign. Obduction started as a Kickstarter campaign in October 2013. Studio founder Rand Miller recently revealed as much on the PlayStation Blog. Obduction for PS4, PSVR, and the Vive will arrive in 2017. Not just that, Cyan wants to take full advantage of virtual reality’s features. When Obduction hits the console on August 29th (just under three weeks from now), it won’t support PlayStation VR. The VR move makes perfect sense for this very reason: virtual reality expands upon Obduction‘s adventure gameplay. Obduction, which was originally released solely for PC, features first-person gameplay to facilitate exploration and interaction with Cyan’s world. “And the PlayStation breaks open our availability as a much broader platform for us.” “We’re going all-in on VR,” Miller told the website. Reported by GamesBeat, the publication interviewed Myst creator Rand Miller about Obduction‘s focus on VR experiences. Now, after a successful Oculus Rift launch, Cyan also has plans to bring Obduction to PlayStation 4, PlayStation VR and HTC Vive. The game quickly became a best-seller, with critics and consumers alike hailing the game’s premise.
